1. The skin is the body's largest organ in the body
2. It protects us from the elements that age our skin so we have to protect IT
3. There are way way WAY too many choices to pick from that range from the price of candy to the price of a bike. Big extremes.
We all have different skin types. For example, mine is oily to normal and is acne prone. So, for me, I use a moisturizer when and where I need it and a very small amount. Also, it has to be oil free. Some people have dry skin and may need something more heavy. Our skin may feel smooth but there are small furrows and breaks in the skin that germs can get into so its good to use a lotion that protects your skin from the elements.
So, the skinny. Do you need to spend a bunch of money on moisturizers for the face? My answer? Kind of. I firmly believe that the cheapest on the market in many things have the cheapest of ingredients and those cheap ingredients don't need to be on your face. So opt for the middle of the road brand unless you have a specific skin need....addressing those needs (dark spots, acne, aging, chronic dry, etc....) costs more money. Its just the way it goes and we can all secretly be envious and hate those folks who have perfect skin without trying:)
A brand to try that is basic, clean, provides sun protection and is not oily....
And when in doubt of if the sun damages your skin. Look at this picture of a long time truck driver whose "drivers side of the face" is wrinkled, sagging, and aged; whereas, the "passenger side of the face" is MUCH less aged. Use a little sunscreen people.
